Kayaking Valdez Glacier Lake

staceyschramm

We drove to Montana and Alaska with kayaks on the truck to be able to drop them in anywhere and everywhere and that is what we have been doing!

Today, on the advice of one of the fellow halibut fishermen, we kayaked on Valdez Glacier Lake. This is one of the few lakes that has fairly easy access to kayak among the glacier ice at the base of a Glacier.

A glacier is one of the most erosive forces there is. The compressed ice is always moving down and carries a lot of rock and debris as it moves and carves it's way down the mountain.

The ice is small above the water (the tip of the Iceberg), and can be very large under the surface.

It can be dangerous to kayak near the ice as pieces break off or submerged ice moves to the surface. It can create capsizing waves if larger ice chunks are involved. We wore life jackets and didn't venture very far within the maze of channels among the icebergs.

There was a kayak tour that came through as we were finishing, so we continued kayaking and followed their path thru the icebergs closest to shore. The water is only about 40 degrees so we didn't venture too far and stayed near the islands versus the ice. I have to make sure we don't get into trouble and come home safe-better safe than sorry!

We paid another visit to the Solomon Fish Hatchery watching the Salmon and Sea Lions!

Pizza on the outside patio at The Fat Mermaid, Valdez History Museum, and a few short hikes near the waterfront were other highlights of the day ❤️
