ALCAN Eastbound

All good things must come to an end right?! The adventure is not over, but the turnaround point has come.

We left Seward, Alaska on a rainy Saturday morning and drove almost 600 miles to the 1202 in Beaver Creek, Yukon. The 1202 is a motel about two miles across the Canadian border.

Our goals for the day were to cross the Canadian border, have the oil changed and the plastic cover hanging under the truck secured or removed, and to see Moose (although that is always a goal!). We accomplished all but one, not for lack of trying.

It was raining in Seward as we left the Nauti Otter full of chocolate chip waffles. I suppose it makes it easier to leave when the weather is not cooperating.

We got an early start as we had about two hours to drive along the coast of Turnagain Arm towards Anchorage (and the oil change place that opened at 9)- what a busy road!

Turns out a friend was heading the opposite way in that line of traffic on the same road and we passed like ships without meeting- we were both on a mission, but makes you realize what a small world it really is!

There were 5400 miles on the truck when we pulled in at 9am for an oil change in Anchorage. No waiting and great service at the Qwik lube- they also were able to remove the plastic cover that was dragging- probably from that 60 mile (each way) dirt washboard McCarthy Rd ;)

Supposedly there are 1500 moose that live in and around Anchorage and I looked up where their most popular hang out spots were- NADA- nothing- no Moose!

We drove from Anchorage, through Palmer, and Wasilla (Sarah Palin lives there). Then continued to Glenallen, Tok and the Canadian border. We all shared driving duties.

It is a long drive, but it is so beautiful, so it's not a hard long drive like Nebraska!

Waiting in the border crossing line took about twenty minutes, but when it was our turn, the questions/discussion and actual crossing took all of about two minutes. We had all of our information uploaded to the ArriveCan app so it went very smooth!

Sunday, we drove from the 1202 motel in Beaver Creek at the border to Watson Lake- another almost 600 miles. We stayed in room #11 again at the Air Force Lodge and had another dinner at the Chinese restaurant in town.

On the road again this am (Monday), headed toward Fort Nelson and Dawson Creek- the end or mile zero of the Alaskan Highway.

The drive started with almost two hours of thick fog- of course my turn for driving- which was probably for the best. The fog finally cleared at Muncho Lake and I was able to throw the kayak in for a short paddle. The lake was so calm and like a mirror! It was so peaceful and perfect. Come to find out- the best part of the day!

As the day has continued, it has turned rainy with some heavy showers that Robert had to navigate. He did well! Hoping to get to Edmonton for the night!

Btw....still no moose!
