Destination Montana...

staceyschramm

Big driving day yesterday. 630 miles and 10 hours of driving plus stops. Traveled Highway 2 all the way across North Dakota and half way through Montana to Havre.

Passed by Michigan, ND, stopped at the Geographical Center of North America in Rugby, ND.

Stretched our legs walking around the Scandinavian Village in Minot, ND

Stopped for gas a few times with prices ranging 4.46- 4.59 a gallon.

Once we passed over the Montana border we had to stop and get our kayaks inspected for invasive species. We had cleaned and scrubbed them well so that was a quick inspection. Western states are very active in trying to stop any invasive species in their lakes. I applaud the effort especially after knowing how bad the zebra mussels are in Michigan lakes and rivers!!

We checked out Ft. Peck dam-what a great engineering feat.

Built in the 1930,s finished in 1940, the Ft. PECK dam is 5 miles long and holds back the 134 mile long Ft. PECK reservoir with it's 1000 miles of shoreline.

10,000 workers built the dam and lots of the small towns around here popped up to house the workers. Ft. PECK is the only town on the reservoir and most of the other towns folded once the dam was finished. It was the largest earth sodden dam when it was built.

There are lots of tributaries and beaches for swimming and boating. Fishing tournaments and derbys are held regularly.

We continued through Glasgow pop 3000 with the final destination for the day being Havre pop 10,000, Montana.

We stayed at The Siesta Motel in Havre. A clean, affordable, retro motel with a great host and everything we needed for the night.
