After disembarking the Alaska Marine Highway Ferry, we drove through the Anton Anderson Tunnel and headed to the Kenai Peninsula and the coastal town of Seward.
We got into town about 3:30 and checked in to The Nauti Otter- a unique inn, cabin, and hostel just outside of town. I love unique accommodations and the affordability and convenience of a hostel type environment. Even my dad likes the vibe! All different, fun, nautical themed lodging.
We stayed in the Kodiak Cavern which was a former garage, converted into cabin with sleeping area for five.
Outhouse flush toilet and outdoor shower were close to the cabin and indoor facilities were also available. We had the use of two kitchens, dining and living areas. Coffee was made by 6am in the morning (#1 thing in my book!) and ingredients to make waffles, pancakes, or oatmeal were available.
There was also a community fire pit, instruments to play, and fun costumes to dress up in!!
After settling in to Kodiak Cavern, we ventured out to investigate what there was to do the next day for Robert's 17th Birthday.
We drove into Kenai Fjords National Park and hiked to the Exit Glacier Overlook. This was a one-mile overlook hike that was perfect for my dad! We also drove to Lowell Point at the furthest end of town.
In June, there was a cliffside collapse that cut the point off from town for over three weeks! There were people in Lowell Point on vacation that had to leave rental cars there and be water taxied around the avalanche back to Seward to then find other transportation to the airport and home (or wait three weeks for the road to be cleared!)
Robert chose some really fun things to do for his 17th birthday the next day and I will write about that soon! ❤️
