Alaska At Last

staceyschramm

We left Haines Junction, Yukon early this morning Alaska bound!

It was a chilly 37 this morning when we woke up and with no heat at the Stardust, we were ready to go early!

Before 7am, we were waiting on the steps of the highly recommended Village Bakery . Their sticky buns are so yummy and were a great way to start the day!

Again, amazing views throughout the drive today. Each day the views get better and better. I already dread our return drive and losing the mountain views.

We had no Sirius radio and had one local fm talk radio channel to listen to. Learned more about Inuit people, the Pope visiting Edmonton, a lawsuit over a mining company flood in South America, and all about losing species of insects. Interesting stuff- lol.

We drove with Kluane Lake on one side of us and Kluane National Park and Icefields on the other side of the road. Kluane NP has vast Icefields and 17 of Canadas 20 highest peaks. Mt. Logan in this range stands at 19, 551 ft and is North America's second highest peak after Denali/Mt McKinely. Amazing views as the sun was coming up.

Passed through the cities of Destruction Bay, Burwash Landing, and Beaver Creek before crossing the Canadian border.

I had heard terrible stories about road conditions along the last stretch of the Alcan. There were a lot of frost heaves and gravel sections from Destruction Bay to the Canadian Border, about a hundred miles. We passed the Canadian border and there was about 25 miles of gravel road in the no man land before we got to the US border. The actual customs crossing couldn't have went any better and I mentioned to the border guard that the roads weren't nearly as bad as I expected and those who thought they were bad must not have driven in lower Michigan with all the potholes!

He laughs and says 'well, those were Trudeau's roads you were just on, wait till you drive Biden's roads that are built back better!' We pulled ahead to talk with the US Fish and Wildlife about our kayaks and then entered Alaska. The first 100 yards were great and it was terrible from there! Not just frost heaves, but so many big pot holes! Like flat tire, rim crunching pot holes!! The building back better isn't going so well there yet!

We continued on to Tok, Alaska and checked into our cabin about noon.
